Spring Method Feeder Fishing
In spring, carp and other commercial fish like F1’s, Bream & Tench prefer lighter, digestible mixes such as groundbait rather than heavy, oily baits like hard pellets. But with Commercial Carp so use to feeding on pellets these can’t be totally ignored. So mixing Pellet and groundbait 50/50 is a great tactic.
Groundbait Choice (Spring-Friendly)
Best options
- Light Fishmeal-based spring/summer method mixes
- Krill or halibut groundbait are to be avoid at this time of year
- Sweet groundbaits (Scopex, Vanilla, Chocolate) work well when water is still cold
Texture
- Slightly damp and fluffy, not sticky
- Should break down in 1–3 minutes
- Add water gradually and avoid over wetting
👉 Tip: Riddle or sieve before and after wetting helps keep it light.
Pellets for the Method
Pellets add attraction and a food element
Best pellet sizes
- 2mm pellets are ideal
- Coarse or Carp pellets keep the oil and food value lower
How to prepare
- Cover pellets with lake water
- Leave for 30–60 seconds
- Drain and rest for 5–10 minutes
- Pellets should be soft but not mushy
Mixing Groundbait + Pellets (Best Combo)
A proven spring mix:
- 1 parts method groundbait
- 1 part soaked micro pellets
- Avoid adding any extra fed items this time of year
This gives:
- Minimal feed (important in spring)
- Clean hookbait presentation
Loading the Method Feeder
- Press bait in lightly
- Don’t over-compress
- Make sure the hookbait sits just proud or slightly buried
In cold water, a looser mix often outfishes a tight-packed feeder.
