Barbel are powerful river fish, commonly found in clean, fast-flowing water where suitable gravel beds provide the conditions they need to spawn. Once you experience the excitement of barbel fishing, it is easy to see why so many anglers return to the river season after season.
Known for their strength and determined runs, barbel can push your tackle to its limits and take you to some fantastic wild locations in search of them. Our range of barbel fishing bait includes a selection of proven options designed to attract these hard-fighting fish and help you put a proper bend in your rod.
Where Do Barbel Live?
Barbel are mainly found in rivers with good water quality, steady flows and gravel beds suitable for spawning. Famous barbel rivers such as the Wye, Severn and Trent remain at the forefront of the sport and attract anglers from across the country.
Where Do Barbel Feed?
Barbel are naturally designed to feed along the riverbed, with downward-facing mouths and sensitive whiskers, or barbels, that help them locate food around gravel, stones and other features.
They are often found close to the edge of faster currents, where quicker water meets slower flows. These areas can collect natural food as it is carried downstream, making them productive places to present your barbel fishing bait.
When Is the Best Time of Year to Fish for Barbel?
September is a popular time for barbel fishing, as bankside vegetation begins to die back and rivers can become easier to access and fish.
The final few weeks of the river fishing season are also particularly popular, with barbel often at some of their heaviest weights after feeding throughout the season.
What Barbel Fishing Bait Works Well?
Barbel respond particularly well to strong-smelling, meaty and fish-based baits that can release plenty of attraction into flowing water. Fishmeal boilies, luncheon meat, halibut pellets and hemp are all proven barbel fishing bait choices.
Traditional baits such as maggots, casters, worms and sweetcorn can also be highly effective. However, these smaller baits can sometimes attract other species before the barbel have a chance to find them.
